10 of the Best Bug Repelling Plants in the World

It can be annoying having to deal with bugs indoors. It seems that bugs have no problem showing ‘favoritism’ to certain people. If you happen to be one of those ‘lucky’ ones, you’d give almost anything to keep them away.

Well, did you know that many of Click & Grow’s plants double up as pest repellers?

It’s quite incredible how it works. The repelling power of certain plants comes from tiny globules. These globules contain essential oils. At high temperatures (or when crushed), the oils become vapors… and pests instinctively avoid these odors.

The bug repellent products you find in stores are often filled with chemicals. Why not give these plants a try as natural alternatives? While no plant is 100% guaranteed to keep bugs away, many have found the ones on this list to be effective.

1. Basil

An ever popular herb and a great source of Vitamin A. Basil compliments a variety of dishes but is also good at repelling pests such as mosquitoes and houseflies. Importantly, basil works as a bug repellent when crushed. Click & Grow currently has four varieties of this special herb: basil, Thai basil, dwarf basil and holy basil.

2. Catnip

Catnip’s aroma will delight your cat and it’s said to have soothing effects on humans while repelling mosquitoes at the same time.

3. Chives

Chives are a delicious ingredient in soups, salads, sandwiches and a whole host of recipes. They can also be a great repellent for common pests such as ants, aphids and beetles.

4. Dill

It’s said to repel bugs such as cabbage loopers, spider mites, aphids and squash bugs. Bugs just can’t deal with dill.

5. French Marigold

One of the easiest, most striking flowers you could grow. Unwanted insects such as whiteflies, aphids and mosquitoes are generally repelled by the natural scent of French marigold’s flowers.

6. Garden Sage

It’s believed that garden sage could enhance cognition in a manner similar to caffeine. Its potent aroma is pleasant to us whereas insects can’t stand it.

7. Lavender

Quite possibly the sweetest smelling plant around, although this opinion isn’t shared by insects. While many people can’t get enough of lavender’s aroma, for some reason insects are repelled by it.

8. Peppermint

Extremely versatile in culinary terms and a great source of Manganese, Copper, and Vitamin C. In addition to this, peppermint can work as a mosquito repellent.

9. Petunia

Another beautiful plant requiring almost no maintenance at all. Petunia’s fresh, aromatic flowers brighten your living space while helping repel a whole host of bugs such as aphids, beetles and leafhoppers.

10. Rosemary

Rosemary is very popular in Mediterranean cuisine and adds an enticing aroma to any meal. It’s also been said to work as a repellent for a variety of insects, including flies and mosquitoes.

Thinking about growing your very own plants that repel insects? Whether you want natural mosquito repellent plants or just plants that repel flies, the ones on this list could come in handy. All of them can easily be grown in your very own Smart Garden 3 and / or Smart Garden 9.
