Earth Day: Look at what we’ve achieved together!

As we celebrate Earth day this year, we want to remind you that you are the real heroes of sustainability! Over the past year, you’ve grown over 2.5 million plants in your smart gardens. A remarkable number.

Here at Click and Grow we believe growing your own food is one of the kindest things you can ever do for the planet. With that in mind, we wanted to share a few facts about what we’ve accomplished together over the last year:

2,089,498 L of water saved

One of the most serious consequences of global warming is water scarcity. When there’s a shortage of water, it has a knock-on effect, causing the prices of meat, eggs and dairy products to rise. Why? These are animal products. In order to grow, animals need to drink large amounts of water and eat grains which require irrigation. Water scarcity makes it difficult to sustain both crops and livestock.

Smart gardens use 95% less water than traditional agricultural methods, thanks to capillary precision irrigation (CPI). By growing food in smart gardens, as a community you saved over 2 million liters of water in the past year.

143,544 kg of food waste prevented

Did you know that more than 30% of food is lost or wasted every year? Food waste is much more than just a humanitarian and social issue. It’s also an environmental issue. When we waste food, we waste all the energy, water, and resources that went into growing, harvesting and transporting it.

It’s alarming to think that regular store-bought greens have a waste rate of over 60%. As a community, you helped prevent over 140 tons of food waste simply by growing food with Click and Grow.

364,382 kg of CO2e emissions prevented by avoiding food waste

CO2e takes into account the global warming potential of all greenhouse gasses. When food rots in landfills or in any other part of its long supply chain, it produces methane - a greenhouse gas 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. By growing your own food, you’ve helped prevent over 364 tons of CO2 equivalent emissions that would have been released into the atmosphere.

10,624 kg of CO2 transport emissions prevented

By growing your own food, you’re reducing the distance food must travel to reach your family's table and cutting down on the number of miles you have to travel for groceries.

Trucks hauling food over long distances from farms to vendors are also a big cause of CO2 emissions. By growing your own food, you're reducing your reliance on such journeys. In the past year, you’ve helped prevent over 10 and a half tons of CO2 transport emissions, simply by growing food in your smart indoor gardens.
